What Are Cellular Shades?
If you’re upgrading your home’s interior, new window treatments are a great place to start, giving your space new texture and color.
Cellular or honeycomb shades are made of fabric cells that expand and contract like an accordion when you raised or lowered. The spaces are designed to trap air, providing insulation, and helping conserve on energy usage.
Here’s what you should know about cellular shades before you buy:
Cellular Shade Opacity or Thickness
Cellular shades are available in sheer, semi sheer, semi opaque, and opaque opacities. With all of the available opacities, these shades work well in any room. Sheer cellular shades will let in the most amount of light, while opaque shades will let in the least, offering the most amount of privacy.
Single-Cell or Double-Celled Shades?
Cellular shades are available in single cell with one air pocket, or double cell with two air pockets. If you live in warmer climates, double-celled shades are recommended since they’re more energy efficient, but they are more typically more expensive.
Cellular (Honeycomb) Shade Orientation Options
Cellular shades are also available in three options: Top down/bottom up, cordless, and motorized. The first option lets you lower the shade from the top and raise it from the bottom, cordless means you won’t see anything hanging from the window treatment, and motorization options come with a remote to do the work for you.
